Novel Ideas: Inclusion in Reading

Reading is such an amazing thing. It lets you escape into new worlds and experience things that would never happen in real life. Not only is this a lot of fun, but it also helps to develop imagination and creativity. As well as that, sitting down and reading a book requires focus, so it helps to develop concentration. Through reading, you discover different words, meaning that reading improves communication skills, language development and fluency (the ability to read with speed, accuracy and expression).

This is why we at KEEN find it so important to make reading as inclusive and accessible as possible. Everyone loves a story, but not everyone is easily able to pick up and read a physical book. It can often be difficult to know where to find suitable reading materials. We have compiled a list of available resources and places to find them below.

Another important aspect of reading is community book groups. These bring people together, not only encouraging reading, but creating friendship. It is really important that these kinds of community groups strive to be as inclusive as possible, but it can often be difficult to know exactly how to make your group inclusive. KEEN has put together some guidance which you can access below (along with a plain text version if needed).
